Days after Modi austerity call, BJP sacks MP Kisan Morcha leader over convoy rally, cites indiscipline

New Delhi: A Madhya Pradesh BJP leader, Sajjan Singh Yadav, who took out a rally with a convoy of hundreds of vehicles to mark his appointment as district president of the party’s farmer wing, has been removed from his position by the state BJP.

Jaipal Singh Chawda, president of Madhya Pradesh Kisan Morcha of the BJP, said the action was initiated on the advice of state chief Hemant Khandelwal.

“It has been learned through newspapers and social media that yesterday, on May 13, 2026, a Kisan Morcha rally was organised under your leadership, with a convoy of hundreds of vehicles from Gwalior to Bhind. This action of yours is a disregard of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s appeal for energy conservation. The state organisation has taken this action of yours seriously and considered it as indiscipline,” Chawda stated in a letter issued to Sajjan Singh.

“Therefore, as per the instructions of state president Hemant Khandelwalji, the appointment of Sajjan Singh Yadav, district president, Kisan Morcha, Bhind, is cancelled,” he added.

On Sunday, PM Modi had made an appeal for austerity, to combat rising fuel prices and economic pressure caused by the West Asia conflict, while addressing a rally organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad.

On Wednesday, the PM drastically reduced the size of his own convoy as part of the suggested austerity measures.

Reducing petrol and diesel consumption, usage of metro rail services in cities, carpooling, increased use of electric vehicles, utilisation of railway services for parcel movement, and working from home, were among the initiatives suggested for the public.

A number of chief ministers from the BJP have been using public transport, including buses and metro or even two-wheelers, following PM Modi’s fuel-saving push.

Speaking to ThePrint, Chawda said the decision to remove Sajjan Singh was taken because the party views indiscipline seriously and such acts give a bad name to the organisation at a time when the entire nation is following PM Modi’s advice.

“The state president took cognisance of the issue and we have taken this decision so that it sends a message to others too,” he added.

According to BJP sources, the party had sought a reply regarding Sajjan Singh’s “show of strength” which had led to severe criticism not only from the opposition but also the public.
