Yavatmal: A forest guard who sustained severe burns while attempting to extinguish a blaze in the Manpur forest area of Yavatmal district died during treatment at a private hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Vijay Singanjude. The incident has once again drawn attention to the lack of adequate equipment for forest staff in remote areas. Sources said modern firefighting tools are essential to tackle forest fires, yet personnel in many areas continue to rely on traditional methods.Officials said controlling a forest fire often requires multiple blower machines. However, several beats have only one machine available, making it difficult to contain flames quickly. The challenge is compounded by dense dry grass and shrubs in reserved forest areas, which grow up to 5–6 feet, allowing fires to spread rapidly depending on wind direction. In the Manpur forest area, thick shrubs and wild basil plants caught fire on March 6, generating intense flames. Forest guard Vijay Singanjude rushed to the spot after informing his seniors and began efforts to control the blaze. While battling the fire, Singanjude sustained more than 60% burn injuries and later succumbed during treatment.
