Slab of new drain line caves in at Ghogli, residents question quality of work | Nagpur News
Nagpur: A sand-laden truck was trapped for a few hours after its rear wheels got stuck in the concrete slab of a newly laid stormwater drain that caved in near a school entrance at Ghogli on Thursday afternoon. Residents alleged the incident points to serious flaws in both road restoration and the quality of materials used for the drainage project. The incident is the third involving a truck in the last fortnight on the stretch from Ghogli Chowk to the school, where cement road and sewer line works are underway simultaneously. As per local residents, the truck was attempting to negotiate the narrow, rain-soaked stretch when its wheel slipped off the carriageway and landed on one of the concrete slabs covering the drain. The slab cracked under the vehicle’s weight.Residents pointed out that this was not an isolated incident. A truck reportedly overturned twice on the very same stretch within the past two weeks after skidding on the muddy road created by the ongoing excavation work.Following the accidents, loose gravel was spread over the road as a temporary solution to improve traction. However, Thursday’s incident has reinforced complaints that the measure has failed to address the underlying problem.Locals claimed that pieces of the concrete slab crumbled easily upon impact, with chunks breaking away in people’s hands, raising doubts about whether the slabs are strong enough to withstand regular vehicular movement.Sources in Besa Pipla Nagar Panchayat told TOI that an inquiry will be initiated into the quality of work by the contractor and strict action will be taken.
