Six booked for forced conversion attempt at Nagpur dargah
Police in Nagpur Rural have registered a case against six individuals, including the chief caretaker of Huzoor Mariyam Amma Dargah in Old Kamptee, following allegations of wrongful confinement, molestation, and an attempt to forcibly convert a woman from Kolkata, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The complainant, a resident of Dum Dum, Kolkata, West Bengal, had been visiting the dargah regularly for several years and arrived in Kamptee on April 18 to attend the annual Urs celebrations.
In her complaint, the woman stated that she was confined against her will from April 18 to 19 and pressured to convert her religion. She claimed she faced threats of serious consequences and alleged physical and mental harassment after resisting the conversion attempt.
The woman escaped and returned to Kolkata, where she received medical treatment before filing a complaint at Dum Dum Police Station. A Zero FIR was initially registered and later transferred to Kanhan Police Station in Nagpur Rural, the location of the incident.
Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police Harsh Pohare said the Kanhan Police registered an offence after receiving the Zero FIR and sent a team to Kolkata to record the victim’s statement. Sections invoked include those relating to assault, criminal intimidation, molestation, attempted murder, and offences related to forced religious conversion.
The accused include two women and have been named as Taji Janveeruddin, Taji Mustafafiruddin Faiz, Tejas Khobragade, Bashra Fatema Taji, Malla Dhule, and one other person. An SIT has been formed to conduct a detailed investigation. Electronic devices have been seized for forensic examination.
Police stated that further action will be decided based on the investigation findings and any additional evidence that emerges.
