NCRB 2024: Nagpur placed 5th among metro cities in rape case statistics
A slight decline in overall crimes against women in 2024 failed to ease concerns as Nagpur continued to figure among the top five metropolitan cities in India for rape cases, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.
The NCRB data suggests that women in the city continue to face considerable safety risks on a daily basis. However, senior Nagpur Police officials disputed the broader interpretation of the figures, stating that a majority of rape complaints are filed against acquaintances or estranged partners.
“Nearly 90% of rape cases are registered by women or girls against known persons, including former boyfriends, which inflates the statistics.
Nagpur Police maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards crimes against women,” a senior officer said.
Another senior official highlighted a recurring pattern in several complaints. “There is a trend of women lodging rape complaints after break-ups, particularly when the man is about to marry someone else. Even in such cases, police take immediate and appropriate action,” the officer said, adding that offences involving minors are handled with utmost seriousness.
Police officials also noted that although the number of sexual assault cases involving minors remains comparatively lower, the seriousness of such offences continues to be a major concern. “Such cases are more severe in nature, which is why campaigns and awareness drives are regularly undertaken,” the official added.
According to the NCRB report, Nagpur registered 1,513 crimes against women in 2024, compared to 1,556 in 2023, marking a marginal decline of 2.76%. However, the figure remained significantly higher than the 1,259 cases recorded in 2022.
The city’s crime rate against women stood at 123.8, placing Nagpur seventh among 19 major metropolitan cities across the country.
Rape cases continued to remain a matter of grave concern. Nagpur recorded 136 rape cases in 2024, with a crime rate of 11.1, making it the fifth-highest among metropolitan cities. The figures underline the continued prevalence of sexual violence despite repeated awareness campaigns and policing initiatives.
Cases of sexual harassment also remained high. The city reported 96 such incidents with a crime rate of 37.9, ranking Nagpur third among major cities after Kochi and Kanpur. Such incidents are commonly reported in workplaces, educational institutions, public transport and public spaces, contributing to growing insecurity among women.
Incidents related to outraging the modesty of women also continued at elevated levels. Nagpur recorded 146 such cases involving 147 victims, resulting in a crime rate of 11.9 and placing the city fifth among metropolitan cities.
Domestic violence emerged as another serious issue. In 2024, the city reported 294 cases of cruelty by husbands or relatives involving 296 victims. The crime rate in this category stood at 24.1, placing Nagpur ninth nationally.
Human trafficking for immoral purposes also added to the concerns surrounding women’s safety. Nagpur registered 16 such cases involving 40 victims, with a crime rate of 1.3, ranking fourth among metropolitan cities.
Experts stressed the need for stronger policing, speedy trials, improved security infrastructure in public places and more effective awareness initiatives to ensure women’s safety. “The NCRB figures serve as a wake-up call for authorities to take immediate and concrete steps to improve women’s safety and restore public confidence,” said an activist.
