Nagpur has reported its first confirmed swine flu death of the year, raising alarms as H1N1 cases surge sharply in July. Health officials are urging residents, especially those at high risk, not to ignore flu-like symptoms and seek medical attention promptly. The development comes as the city records a significant increase in laboratory-confirmed cases, prompting intensified surveillance and public awareness campaigns.

With monsoon conditions often favoring respiratory infections, experts warn that early diagnosis and preventive measures are crucial to contain the spread and prevent further fatalities.

According to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), July alone has accounted for more than 60% of the city’s H1N1 cases reported this year, highlighting how seasonal changes can create favourable conditions for the spread of respiratory viruses. Health experts say early diagnosis and timely treatment remain the best defence, particularly for those at higher risk of severe illness.

The NMC’s H1N1 Death Audit Committee reviewed two recent deaths linked to suspected swine flu. After examining medical records, laboratory findings, treatment details and underlying medical conditions, the committee confirmed that one patient died due to Influenza A (H1N1). The second death was found to be unrelated to the virus because the patient had multiple pre-existing illnesses.

So far this year, Nagpur has reported 25 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 infections, with 15 cases detected in July alone. Of these, 13 cases were reported within the Nagpur Municipal Corporation limits.
