MRIDC clears major hurdles, Mominpura Y-shaped flyover work picks up pace; target set for March 2027
Nagpur: After years of delays caused by encroachments, land disputes and local opposition, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) has accelerated construction of the long-pending Y-shaped Mominpura flyover and is now targeting completion by March 2027. An MRIDC official said nearly 70% of the project has been completed, with work progressing steadily on multiple fronts. “Foundation and substructure work is complete, while around 50% of the superstructure, including girder launching, is finished. Road concretisation beneath the flyover has also begun,” the official said. The 2.82km flyover, initially sanctioned at ₹146 crore, is now expected to cost around ₹185 crore following delays and additional works. The project aims to ease chronic traffic congestion between Kadbi Chowk and Golibar Chowk, particularly near the Motibagh railway crossing. The bhoomipujan for the project was held in July 2021, after which construction began. However, work slowed due to encroachments, residents’ objections, land acquisition disputes, tree-felling permissions, and the shifting of power cables and water pipelines in the Mominpura area.Officials said most of these hurdles have now been cleared, enabling faster execution. The flyover will begin at Kadbi Chowk and extend up to the Pehelwan Shah Dargah T-point. From there, one arm will head towards Mominpura, while the second will branch towards Santra Market and connect to the Platform No. 8 side of Nagpur railway station. The Kadbi Chowk-to-Mominpura arm will feature an 11-metre-wide carriageway, while the Santra Market arm will be 7.5 metres wide.MRIDC initially aimed to complete the project by December 2025. However, repeated disruptions pushed the deadline to the end of 2026, which has now been revised to March 2027.For years, residents and motorists criticised MRIDC over slow progress, traffic snarls and dust pollution in the area. With construction finally gaining momentum, many are hopeful the flyover will bring long-awaited relief to commuters using the congested Mominpura-Kadbi Chowk corridor.PROJECT AT A GLANCE* 2.82-km Y-shaped flyover project by MRIDC* Connects Kadbi Chowk, Mominpura and Santra Market* Will pass over Motibagh railway crossing* Main arm width: 11 metres* Santra Market arm width: 7.5 metres* Initial cost: ₹146 crore* Revised project cost: ₹185 crore* New completion target: March 2027MAJOR OBSTACLES CLEARED* Encroachments at multiple locations removed* Local objections and protests resolved* Land acquisition disputes addressed* Tree-cutting permissions obtained* Power cable shifting completed* Water pipeline shifting in Mominpura executed* Delays pushed deadline beyond original target
