Maha Cabinet takes key decisions on recruitment reforms, skill university, health sector

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Monday took several important policy decisions aimed at strengthening governance, improving recruitment processes, boosting skill development and enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the state. A total of seven major decisions were approved during the meeting.
One of the key decisions relates to reforms in the recruitment process for government services. In line with the state’s long-term development blueprint, “Developed Maharashtra 2047”, the government will introduce changes to make recruitment procedures more efficient and transparent. The number of service cadres recruited through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) will be significantly expanded from 53 to 153.
Under the revised framework, additional services will be included in the combined examination scheme, making the recruitment process more streamlined. The state government will also introduce the “Nipun Setu” initiative through the Mahajobs Portal, modelled on the recruitment systems used by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), to facilitate easier access to government job opportunities and skill matching.
Skill University in Mumbai
In another major decision, the Cabinet approved the establishment of the IES Skill Tech University in Mumbai. The institution will be set up as a permanently self-financed private skill university and is expected to play a significant role in creating a skilled workforce and promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities in the state.
Power infrastructure in Badlapur
The Cabinet also approved a proposal from the Urban Development Department to modify the land reservation in the approved development plan for the Kalyan–Badlapur region. A four-acre plot originally reserved for a stadium in Kulgaon-Badlapur will now be allocated for a power substation and transferred to Tata Power to strengthen electricity infrastructure in the rapidly expanding suburban area.
Infrastructure support for fishermen
The Cabinet approved a financial outlay of Rs 61.24 crore to develop basic facilities for fishermen in coastal districts under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund supported by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The initiative will focus on improving infrastructure and support systems for fishing communities.
Strengthening Medical Education and Health Services
In a major boost to the state’s healthcare system, the Cabinet approved a project aimed at strengthening medical education, nursing services and the overall healthcare delivery mechanism in Maharashtra. For this purpose, financial assistance amounting to Rs 3,708 crore will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project is expected to modernise infrastructure, enhance training systems and improve the efficiency of healthcare institutions across the state.
Expansion of aspirational district programme
The Cabinet also decided to expand the scope of development initiatives under the aspirational districts programme linked to the NITI Aayog. Six additional districts, Hingoli, Jalna, Palghar, Beed, Dhule and Parbhani, will now be included in the programme.
With this expansion, development schemes focusing on balanced and accelerated growth will be implemented across 177 talukas, including the existing 27 aspirational talukas and 150 newly added ones.
Changes in Maharashtra Medical Council law
Another key decision involves amendments to the legislation governing the Maharashtra Medical Council. Based on the recommendations of a high-level committee, changes will be introduced in the administrative and institutional structure of the council.
Under the proposed amendment, members of the council will no longer be elected but will instead be nominated by the state government, with the aim of improving regulatory oversight and administrative efficiency.
These decisions are expected to bring significant improvements in governance, employment generation, healthcare services and regional development across Maharashtra.
