IIIT Nagpur student dies by suicide after jumping from hostel, probe initiated

A tragic incident was reported early Monday morning at the IIIT Nagpur campus, where a second-year engineering student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the top floor of a hostel building.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place around 4:30 am within the institute premises. The student, enrolled in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) with a specialised track, was staying in the campus hostel.

Sources said the student allegedly jumped from the hostel building, suffering fatal injuries. Hostel authorities and fellow students rushed to the spot after learning about the incident, and emergency services were immediately informed. However, the student was declared dead soon after.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially revealed as authorities are in the process of informing family members.

Police have reached the campus and started an investigation into the incident. Officials are examining possible academic or personal stress factors, the student’s recent behaviour and communication, and statements from friends, classmates, and hostel staff.

Authorities said the exact reason behind the incident remains unclear and no conclusions have been reached so far.

As of now, the administration of IIIT Nagpur has not issued a detailed public statement on the matter. Internal procedures and coordination with law enforcement agencies are currently underway.

The incident has left students on campus in shock, with many expressing grief over the sudden loss of their batchmate.
