GMR to take over operations at Nagpur airport on June 25 | Nagpur News


Nagpur: GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL) will take over operations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport on June 25, with the process of handing over possession now in its final stage.A top official involved in the process said, “The commercial operation date has been officially fixed as June 25. GMR will take possession of the airport on that date and immediately begin work on expansion.”Uninterrupted dialogue is underway between Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), GMR, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Mihan India Ltd to ensure a smooth handover. A meeting was held in the presence of MADC joint managing director Dr Vipin Itankar last week, in which issues, including handing over possession and rehabilitation of project-hit persons were discussed.The airport expansion is being carried out under four packages. The first covers civil, structural, finishing and sanitary work for expansion of the passenger terminal building. The second includes rehabilitation of airside and landside pavements, construction of a new apron and overlay of taxiways and perimeter road. The third covers excavation for airside and landside works, while the fourth includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing work along with internal and external lighting for the terminal building.The official said GMR’s plans include beautification of the old terminal building, construction of a new terminal and a second runway by 2029.MADC vice-chairman and managing director Deepak Kapoor is expected to visit Mihan on June 15 and 16. The expansion of Nagpur Airport and development of Mihan facilities are expected to come up for discussion during the visit.
