First moderate rains lash city; IMD’s ‘Yellow Alert’ till July 1

Nagpur witnessed the first moderate monsoon rains as it recorded 35 mm rains in one hour on Saturday evening.
However, the rains were patchy as South-West, South, and West areas of the Second Capital of the State witnessed rains whereas Central, North and East Nagpur remained dry.
With 35 mm rains, Nagpur recorded the highest rainfall on Saturday in Vidarbha. Akola also received 34 mm rainfall followed by Brahmapuri (5 mm), Amravati (4 mm), Washim (3 mm) and Buldhana (2 mm).
Whereas, in last 36 hours, Akola reported the highest 38.9 mm rainfall followed by Nagpur (35 mm), Yavatmal (35 mm), Washim (11.6 mm), Wardha (9.8 mm), Amravati (7.2 mm), Brahmapuri (5 mm), Buldhana (3 mm), and Gondia (2 mm).
Despite arrival of the southwest monsoon in Vidarbha, majority districts witnessed maximum temperature on the higher side with Brahmapuri and Gondia recording highest day temperature at 38 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
With highest maximum temperature, Gondia also reported the highest departure from the normal temperature by 4.7 degrees Celsius in the region.
The departure in Brahmapuri was 4.4 degrees Celsius. Nagpur (37.4 degrees Celsius), Bhandara (37.0 degrees Celsius), Chandrapur (36.8 degrees Celsius), Wardha (36 degrees Celsius) and Amravati (35.2 degrees Celsius) recorded the day temperature above 35 degrees Celsius mark on Saturday. With the start of monsoon, relative humidity also increased significantly throughout the region. Akola recorded 100 per cent humidity while other districts like Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, and Washim reported humidity above 80 per cent.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued ‘Yellow Alert’ for Vidarbha from June 28 to July 1. The region will witness thunderstorm accompanied with lightning. Gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are likely to hit isolated places in Vidarbha.
The Weather Department predicted that rainfall will be patchy most of the time in the next few days with one or two spells of widespread rains in the region.
