Adhik Maas Begins Today: Sacred Month of Prayer and Devotion Starts

The holy month of Adhik Maas commenced on Sunday, marking the beginning of a spiritually significant period dedicated to prayer, fasting, charity, and self-discipline. Also known as Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas, the sacred month will continue till June 15.

According to Bhupesh Gadge, Founder of Aryabhatta Astronomy Park in Chauki, Adhik Maas holds both religious and astronomical significance rooted in ancient Vedic traditions.

Explaining the scientific basis of the month, Gadge said the Hindu lunar calendar and solar calendar differ in duration. “While the solar year takes about 365 days, the lunar year ends in nearly 354 days, creating a gap of around 11 days annually. To balance this difference, an extra lunar month is added approximately every three years, known as Adhik Maas,” he explained. He further stated that when the Sun does not change its zodiac sign, or no Sankranti occurs during a lunar month, that month is recognised as Adhik Maas.

The month is considered highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Vishnu and performing religious activities. Devotees observe fasts, recite prayers, read holy scriptures, and engage in charitable acts during this period. Gadge noted that spiritual practices performed during Adhik Maas are believed to bring manifold blessings.

At the same time, several traditions advise against beginning new ventures or holding auspicious ceremonies during this period. Weddings, housewarming ceremonies, Mundan rituals, and business launches are generally postponed during Adhik Maas, which is also referred to as Mal Maas.In Maharashtra, the month is popularly known as Dhondyacha Mahina. A unique custom followed in many households involves offering 33 Anaarse sweets along with gifts to the son-in-law as part of the observance.

Temples across the region are expected to witness a rise in devotees over the coming weeks as people participate in prayers and religious rituals during the sacred month.
