NMC Proposes 5% Increase in Bills
Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation is planning a 5% hike in water tariffs across all categories, which could soon lead to higher monthly bills for consumers in the city.
The proposal has been initiated by the water works department under provisions of the Nagpur City Water Rate Assessment and Collection Bylaws, 2009. As per the rules, the municipal commissioner is authorized to approve up to a 5% tariff increase in a financial year without requiring approval from the general body, provided the decision is presented before the standing committee for record.
If the proposed revision goes through, it will mark the first increase since 2023. Over the past two years, no tariff hikes were implemented despite the provision allowing annual revisions, offering temporary relief to residents amid rising living costs.
However, the timing of the proposed hike has raised concerns among citizens. Issues such as faulty billing, inaccurate water meters, and irregular water supply continue to affect several areas of the city. Many believe that increasing tariffs without resolving these problems would add unnecessary financial pressure on households.
On the other hand, civic officials have pointed to rising operational and maintenance costs, along with financial constraints faced by the municipal body, as key reasons behind the move.
Current Water Tariff Structure:
- Residential (R1):
- 0–20 units: ₹8.15/unit
- 21–30 units: ₹13.03/unit
- 31–80 units: ₹17.93/unit
- Above 80 units: ₹24.44/unit
- Institutional (IA/IB): ₹21.17 to ₹32.59 per unit
- Commercial (C1A/C1B/C2): ₹40.73 to ₹122.17 per unit
- Slum Connections:
- Minimum monthly charges range from ₹48.86 (hutments) to ₹81.45 (RCC houses)
Minimum monthly charges are also applied based on pipe size, ranging from 15mm to 300mm, which impacts the base billing regardless of consumption.
If implemented, the revised tariff is expected to impact all consumer categories across Nagpur, with further discussions likely at the standing committee level.
