Maharashtra minister Rane asks officials to speed up Panvel aquarium project

Maharashtra Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane on Tuesday directed officials to expedite work on the proposed Silla Aquarium and Sea Lion Entertainment Centre in Panvel, with a target of laying its foundation stone by Diwali.
The proposed facility will come up at the fisheries sub-centre in Panvel in Raigad district and is envisioned as a marine tourism, education and research destination.
Aquarium to feature marine and freshwater exhibits
The project will include marine and freshwater aquariums, a marine biodiversity exhibition, an ocean tunnel, a digital learning centre for students and a touch pool.
It will also feature displays of jellyfish, coral reefs and other marine life, along with facilities for research and breeding.
A sea lion entertainment centre is also planned, along with facilities for the care of marine mammals, training and maintenance areas, an amphitheatre, snow park and 12-D theatre.
The proposed visitor amenities include food outlets, souvenir shops, parking areas and gardens.
Project aimed at boosting marine tourism
“The project concept is well planned and it is important from the tourism perspective. Plan the work so that the foundation stone is laid by Diwali by expediting further action,” Rane said during a review meeting at Mantralaya.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of decisions taken during earlier meetings, as well as the technical and administrative aspects of the project and plans to develop it as a tourism destination.
Rane said the project would make use of available government land in Panvel for tourism, education, research and revenue generation.
He said the project’s location near Mumbai and Navi Mumbai could help strengthen marine tourism in Maharashtra.
Centre to provide research and learning opportunities
The facility is also expected to give students practical exposure to marine biology and fisheries science while supporting research activities.
Rane said its proximity to Navi Mumbai airport could help attract visitors from across India and abroad and make the centre more accessible to students.
He directed the departments concerned to coordinate and complete the necessary technical and administrative procedures and submit a report on further action.
Rane also asked officials to prepare for another review meeting after two weeks and ensure that long-term maintenance plans are incorporated into the project to maintain the centre’s quality.
