Introduce mandatory breathalyser tests for school transport drivers: Hyderabad Traffic Police to managements

In the wake of recent cases of school transport drivers being booked for driving under the influence of alcohol, the Hyderabad Traffic Police on Monday (July 6, 2026) directed schools to introduce mandatory breathalyser tests for drivers before they begin duty.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-II) Kajal Singh chaired a meeting with the managements of The Slate School, All Saints High School, Olive Mount School, St. Paul’s School and Goutham Model School, along with officers from Goshamahal Traffic Police Station, to strengthen safety standards in school transportation.

During the meeting, police instructed schools to ensure that all drivers operating school transport vehicles undergo compulsory pre-duty breathalyser tests. School managements were also asked to sensitise parents and private transport operators on safe commuting practices.

The police further directed schools to strictly enforce road safety norms by preventing overcrowding in school vehicles, discouraging rash and negligent driving, ensuring drivers do not consume alcohol while on duty, and maintaining proper supervision while handing over children at designated drop-off points.

According to the Traffic Police, the participating schools responded positively and have initiated steps to implement the recommended safety measures to improve the safety of students travelling by school transport.
