Rs 3.5 lakh gold jewellery stolen from West Bengal trader’s hotel room in Nagpur

Nagpur: A West Bengal-based textile trader staying at a hotel in Nagpur’s Ganeshpeth area has reported the theft of gold jewellery worth around Rs 3.5 lakh from his room. Based on his complaint, Ganeshpeth police have registered a case against his employee, whom the trader suspects of stealing the jewellery.

The police have launched a search for the accused and are also making efforts to recover the stolen ornaments.

According to police, the complainant, Yogesh Sharma, a resident of Howrah, West Bengal, is engaged in the textile business and had travelled to Nagpur for business purposes. He was staying at The Asian Inn hotel in Ganeshpeth, where he had booked Room No. 107.

His employee, Rakesh Jetharam Sharma, a resident of Rajasthan, was also staying with him in the same room.

Jewellery left on table before bath

The alleged theft took place between approximately 9 am and 2 pm on Friday, according to the complaint.

Yogesh told police that before going to take a bath, he removed his gold jewellery and placed it on a table inside the hotel room. The jewellery included three gold rings weighing around 30 grams, collectively valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh, and a gold earring weighing around 5 grams, valued at about Rs 50,000.

The total value of the missing jewellery has been estimated at around Rs 3.5 lakh.

According to the complaint, Yogesh went to the bathroom after leaving the ornaments on the table. He suspects that Rakesh took advantage of his absence, allegedly picked up the jewellery and left the hotel.

When Yogesh returned from the bathroom, he found that the jewellery was missing. He searched the room but could not find the ornaments. Suspicion subsequently fell on his employee, who was allegedly present in the room at the time.

Yogesh informed the hotel management about the incident before approaching Ganeshpeth police and lodging a complaint.

Police examine CCTV footage

Ganeshpeth police have registered a case under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the complaint and have launched a search for Rakesh.

Investigators are also trying to trace the stolen jewellery and determine whether it has been sold, concealed or taken elsewhere.

The incident has also brought the hotel’s security arrangements under scrutiny. Police are examining how the suspect allegedly left the premises and whether CCTV cameras installed inside and around the hotel captured any relevant movement.

Investigators are likely to examine hotel records, details of people entering and leaving the premises and available CCTV footage as part of the investigation.

Police said the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged theft, as well as the whereabouts of the stolen jewellery, are expected to become clear after the accused is traced and questioned.
