Nagpur, Jul 27 (PTI) A theft and robbery case accused escaped from the premises of a police station in Nagpur on Monday while he was being taken to the washroom, an official said.

The accused, identified as Harsh alias Ekka Mahendra Ramteke (25), was lodged in the lock-up of Hudkeshwar police station after being handed over by Umred Police.

At 7.30 am on Monday, he requested to use the restroom at the police station. A police staff member took him out of the lock-up. Taking advantage of the situation, he allegedly escaped from the police station.

Police said Ramteke is a habitual offender and is involved in several theft cases. He allegedly targeted hotels and stole valuables to support his drug addiction.

“As soon as the escape was reported, multiple police teams and the Crime Branch were pressed into service. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined, and efforts are on to trace the accused at the earliest,” a senior police officer said.

He said a departmental inquiry has also been initiated, and appropriate action will be taken if negligence is found. PTI COR NSK
