NEET paper leak a ‘grave sin’, not a political issue: Modi to NDA

New Delhi: Terming the NEET paper leak a “grave sin”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said the government took immediate action in the matter and held those responsible accountable.

The PM made these comments during the NDA’s parliamentary party meeting, stating that the NEET issue is not political but concerns the youth of the country.

The PM’s statement comes at a time when anger is evident among students and parents across the country regarding the NEET exam paper leak, which led to protests at Jantar Mantar spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

“The PM said as soon as news of the paper leak came, the government immediately carried out an investigation and 13 people were arrested. To ensure students’ future wasn’t jeopardised, a re-examination of NEET was conducted,” Rijiju said.

“At the same time, to ensure that students’ future was not affected, the NEET re-examination was given priority, conducted successfully, and the results were declared without delay. The Prime Minister also said that strict steps have been taken to prevent such paper leaks in the future. Those found involved in the paper leak racket have been arrested and jailed,” he added.

On the NEET examination, the Prime Minister said that the government acted immediately after reports of the paper leak surfaced, and 13 people were arrested and sent to jail.

Rijiju also said the PM made an appeal that those guilty should be given the strictest possible punishment, with the support of the country’s top lawyers.

“So that those involved in such a grave offence face exemplary action and such incidents do not recur,” he added.

On Monday in what could be the first government acknowledgement of a month-long protest, on a day when thousands of supporters stormed the national capital and demanded that their voices be heard, Union Minister J. P. Nadda met representatives of CJP and said: “For the first time this morning, a proposal to hold talks with the government came from the protesters, and our discussion has been ongoing since 11.50 am.”

According to a senior MP, the PM also pointed out that paper leak was not only a matter of one state and not just a central issue, but of the entire country. “All those who have committed such (paper leak) crimes across the country, everyone (all political parties) should come together to ensure they are punished. This is not a political issue but an issue of the country. And to prevent such people from playing with the future of our youth we need to take strict action and ensure that the fool-proof system which is already working, everyone should contribute,” Rijiju added.

PM Modi, during the meeting, described the entire incident as a “heinous/grave sin”, and emphasised that all state governments must work together to ensure that incidents like paper leaks do not occur in future.

Another MP from Karnataka said that PM Modi felt the NEET re-examination went well. “We are always there but we should build a system. He further said that while paper leaks were common occurrences earlier this time action was taken,” he said.

“PM was not just talking about the NEET exam but exams in general too. He said the exam leaks were due to selfish motives. We should build a system that should not hamper children’s future,” the MP said. The MP also pointed out that there was no mention of the ongoing protests.

The MP pointed out that the government ensured that the NEET re-exam was not delayed and it was done as soon as possible, and the results also came on time. The PM reiterated his stand that “nobody will be spared”.
