Nagpur woman dies by suicide after harassment by live-in partner

Nagpur: A 51-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Bajaj Nagar after prolonged harassment by her live-in partner, prompting police to register a criminal case.

The deceased, identified as Reshma Shashikant Rewatkar, had been living with accused Shashank Gyaneshwar Gajbhiye (46) in Suresh Apartment, Tatya Tope Nagar, following her divorce in 2019.

According to the complaint filed by her daughter, the accused frequently subjected Rewatkar to physical and mental abuse, suspecting her character and assaulting her repeatedly. On April 9, he allegedly assaulted her again, intensifying the harassment.

Unable to bear the continued abuse, Rewatkar reportedly jumped from the second floor of her residence on April 10 around 1 am, leading to her death.

Initially registered as an accidental death, the case took a serious turn after the complaint and inquiry. Bajaj Nagar Police have now registered an offence under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the accused.

Further investigation is in progress.
