The bye-election in the Nagpur Local Authorities’ Constituency became necessary following the resignation of senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule from the Maharashtra Legislative Council after he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in November 2024. Bawankule had vacated the MLC seat on November 23, 2024. The tenure of the seat is scheduled to continue until January 1, 2028.

In a separate announcement, the Election Commission also declared biennial elections for 16 vacant seats in various Local Authorities’ Constituencies across Maharashtra. The elections to these seats had been pending despite completion of the terms of sitting members due to constitutional and administrative requirements linked to the functioning of local self-government bodies.

According to the Commission, elections to Local Authorities’ Constituencies can only be conducted when at least 75 per cent of the local bodies in a constituency are functional and when at least 75 per cent of eligible electors are available. The Chief Electoral Officer Maharashtra has now confirmed that the required conditions have been fulfilled in all the concerned constituencies, allowing the electoral process to move forward.

The 16 constituencies where biennial elections will be held include Solapur, Ahmednagar, Thane, Jalgaon, Sangli-cum-Satara, Nanded, Yavatmal, Pune, Bhandara-cum-Gondia, Raigad-cum-Ratnagiri-cum-Sindhudurg, Nashik, Wardha-cum-Chandrapur-cum-Gadchiroli, Amravati, Osmanabad-cum-Latur-cum-Beed, Parbhani-cum-Hingoli, and Aurangabad-cum-Jalna.

As per the election schedule issued by the Commission, the official notification will be published on May 25. The last date for filing nomination papers is June 1, while scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on June 2. Candidates can withdraw their nominations till June 4.

Voting will be held on June 18 between 8 am and 4 pm. Counting of votes is scheduled for June 22, and the entire election process is expected to be completed by June 25.

The announcement has triggered political activity across Maharashtra, especially in Nagpur, where political parties are expected to begin internal discussions and candidate selection exercises in the coming days.
