Nag River Project Picks Up Pace As NMC Moves To Open Bids For 535km Sewer Network Works | Nagpur News
Nagpur: The Rs542-crore North and Central Zone sewer revamp project has reached a crucial stage, with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Public Health Engineering Department set to open financial bids for 534.89km of sewerage network works shortly.Officials said two contractors have submitted bids for the North Zone package, while one firm has bid for the Central Zone works. The financial bid opening will mark a significant milestone in the Rs1,926.99-crore Nag River Pollution Abatement Project being implemented under the National River Conservation Plan. The North Zone project, estimated at Rs253.17 crore, involves laying 110.9km of secondary sewer lines and replacing 137km of ageing branch sewers. The works are critical as several localities in North Nagpur either lack an underground sewer network or have lines discharging directly into the Pili River, a major source of pollution in the Nag River system. The Central Zone component, valued at Rs289.29 crore, includes 113.6km of secondary sewer lines and replacement of 98km of old branch sewers. Officials said the ageing network has deteriorated in several areas, leading to frequent complaints of blockages, overflows and sewer collapses. The project will also extend underground sewer connectivity to areas currently outside the network, including parts of Civil Lines.Together, the two packages involve construction and replacement of nearly 535km of sewer pipelines at a cost exceeding Rs542 crore, making them among NMC’s largest sewer infrastructure upgrades in recent years.Meanwhile, NMC is finalising tenders for two other key components of the river-cleaning project. These include interceptor sewers, diversion manholes and pumping stations along the Nag River, Pili River and Bor Nala at a cost of Rs411.72 crore, and sewage treatment projects worth Rs415.79 crore, including new sewage treatment plants and upgrades to existing facilities.INFOBOX535km Sewer Network Upgrade247.9km sewer works in North Zone211.6km sewer works in Central ZoneTotal sewer network works: 534.89kmCost of North & Central Zone works: Rs542.46 croreFinancial bids to be opened shortlyOther Major Works Planned48.78km interceptor sewers along rivers and nalas107 diversion manholesFour pumping stations and rehabilitation of two existing stationsNew STPs with 102 MLD treatment capacityTotal project cost: Rs1,926.99 crore
