Nagpur: The demolition of four illegal bridges over a natural nullah at Kachipura may have cleared one hurdle for Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), but a larger encroachment battle awaits the civic body. Its long-pending action against 56 commercial establishments spread across nearly 19.82 hectares of PDKV land along Central Bazar Road includes shops, restaurants, garages, automobile workshops and event lawns.A senior Dharampeth Zone official told TOI that, apart from the High Court proceedings, two appeals related to the action are pending before Mantralaya. The civic body will proceed based on the outcome of the court case and the administrative appeals, the official said.The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 12, when the court is expected to examine NMC’s compliance report and its proposed action against the illegal structures.The immediate demolition of the bridges has therefore opened a larger question: whether NMC will now be able to reclaim the nullah corridor and government/PDKV land from commercial encroachments that have persisted for years.
