Kidneys donated after Gadchiroli student’s death save 2 lives

Nagpur: The family of a 26-year-old student from Gadchiroli district donated his kidneys after he was declared brain stem dead, thus saving the lives of two patients awaiting transplants.Rohit Gulade, a resident of Desaiganj (Wadsa) in Gadchiroli, suffered severe head injuries after his motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the night of July 12. After initial treatment at a local hospital, he was shifted to the intensive care unit at AIIMS Nagpur. Despite all medical efforts, Rohit suffered extensive brain haemorrhage and was declared brain stem dead after the mandatory medical and legal protocol was completed by the Brain Stem Death Committee.Following counselling by AIIMS transplant coordinators, Rohit’s father Tryambak, a former deputy tehsildar, mother Kalpana Gulade, sister Rajgini and other family members consented to donate both his kidneys. The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Nagpur, coordinated the allocation of the organs as per national guidelines. One kidney was transplanted into a 38-year-old patient at AIIMS Nagpur, while the second was allotted to a 29-year-old recipient at a private hospital in the city.AIIMS staff paid tribute to the donor by forming an honour corridor as his organs were retrieved, while ZTCC arranged free ambulance service to transport his mortal remains to his native village in Gadchiroli. As per ZTCC, Rohit became Nagpur region’s 13th deceased organ donor of 2026 and the 197th deceased donor since the centre began coordinating organ donation in 2013.
