Kavitha launches TRS, says she ‘atones some people’s misdeeds’
Hyderabad: Former Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha, the daughter of ex-chief minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi founder K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), launched a new political party Saturday, 10 months after being suspended from the BRS (formerly TRS) for alleged anti-party activities.
Interestingly, she named her party TRS—Telangana Rashtra Sena—and threw down a gauntlet to her estranged family members and former party colleagues in the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
Amidst loud chants of Jai Telangana and TRS Zindabad at the launch in Muneerabad, Kavitha released her party’s flag and symbol.
At a packed hall in a convention centre of 50,000 capacity in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, the 48-year-old leader addressed the rapturous crowd, saying she was starting the Telangana Rashtra Sena to serve the state’s 3.5-crore population as a “mother figure”.
“The Telangana Rashtra Sena has come before with a profound purpose. We are here to bring about transformative change through good governance and by blending people’s movements with constitutional political power. Only then can we have social justice and a Telangana that we have all envisioned,” she thundered, standing at the edge of a ramp that was protruding from the stage.
She paid homage to the revolutionaries who fought for Telangana’s statehood movement, but made only a passing reference to her father, KCR.
Kavitha outlined five key priorities her party would champion—education, healthcare, employment, farmer welfare, and social justice—calling them the ‘Panchajanya Reform’, a term drawn from Lord Krishna’s conch.
These specific promises follow her announcement in March that her party, which was yet to be formed, would stand for universal upliftment and welfare, with inclusive development and self-sufficiency as core principles.
“Let us wage our struggle on the five key aspects. Our government will come to power. I am like a mother to you; I will not look at my pockets, I will look after your well-being,” she said.
Kavitha said her TRS would be positioned as an alternative to the “current corrupt Congress” government, a “derailed” BRS that has “disappointed” the people of Telangana, and a “disinterested” BJP that “never wanted” a separate state carved from Andhra Pradesh.

Declares war on ‘corrupted’ father
Taking potshots at her father and BRS President KCR, she said, “KCR isn’t the same anymore. The KCR of the past cared about people, fought for the people, and got their problems solved. His heart was in the right place. Power corrupted him. KCR has lost control of his political statements. Therefore, I will fight him. I will wage war for the people of Telangana, and that is non-negotiable.”
Acknowledging she was part of the family that ruled the state, Kavitha tendered an unconditional apology to the people of Telangana for the “misdeeds” that were committed during the 10-year BRS regime by “certain people”, indirectly referring to her brother KT Rama Rao, and her cousins T Harish Rao and J Santhosh Rao.
She said she was setting up the party to “atone for the misdeeds”.
Kavitha said all sections of society would be cared for and provided for if she were voted to power.
“The ‘Telangana Chariot’ has presently gone off track. We all believed that a separate state would free us from our chains. Instead, farmers are suffering, Dalits are suffering, and even personal freedom is under constant threat; every single citizen of Telangana is being subjected to the brutality and negligence of those in power. To realise our dreams and give wings to our aspirations, political power is necessary.”
Blaming the two national parties, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the BRS for “not being able to” fulfil the three promises (Neellu, Nidhulu, Niyamakalu- water, funds, and jobs) made to the people of the state, Kavtiha said she seeks to establish a governance model akin to a ‘mother’s rule’.
“A mother’s rule is unconditional, considerate, and giving,” she said, alleging that successive governments in the state have failed to meet the expectations of farmers, youth, industrialists, and marginalised communities.
Rift with the family
In September 2025, Kavitha’s father and BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao suspended her for “anti-party” activities. The suspension resulted from party leaders openly calling Kavitha’s actions “anti-party” and viewing her continued association as damaging to party interests.
Before the suspension, in an open letter to her father, Kavitha held her cousins J Santhosh Rao and T Harish Rao responsible for failing to shield her father from the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project controversy.
She stated that her cousins had colluded with the ruling Congress to “accumulate assets and tarnish KCR’s image.” She also indirectly targeted her brother, KT Rama Rao, over internal rifts within the BRS.
After her suspension from BRS, Kavitha continued her public appearances, taking a stance on several regional and national issues as president of Telangana Jagruti, the cultural wing of the BRS, which she still held over.
