Govt plans to complete Bandra-Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road by 2028: Goyal
Union Commerce and Industry Minister and Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal on Sunday said the government aims to complete the Bandra-Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road project by December 2028, with March 2029 set as the final target timeline, reported the PTI.
Goyal reviewed the progress of several major infrastructure projects in Mumbai, including the Coastal Road, proposed desalination plant, Madh-Versova Bridge and other connectivity initiatives.
He was briefed by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar on the current status, project timelines and expected benefits for citizens.
Speaking after the review meeting, Goyal said construction on the Bandra-Versova section of the Coastal Road is progressing quickly, while work on the Versova-Bhayander stretch has started after receiving necessary approvals, as per the PTI.
The project is expected to strengthen transport connectivity along Mumbai’s western coastline and provide faster movement between different parts of the city.
Travel time expected to reduce significantly
The Mumbai Coastal Road is an eight-lane high-speed expressway being developed along the western coast, the news agency reported.
According to the PTI, once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time between south Mumbai and the western suburbs from nearly two hours to around 40 minutes.
Piyush Goyal said that the proposed interchanges and tunnel networks in north Mumbai would help reduce congestion on the Western Express Highway and improve east-west connectivity across the western suburbs.
Desalination plant to improve water security
During his visit, Piyush Goyal also reviewed the proposed desalination plant project, saying it would play an important role in strengthening Mumbai’s long-term water supply.
The desalination plant is expected to provide drinking water to areas including Gorai, Manori, Mahavir Nagar, Borivali, Charkop and nearby regions.
The Union Minister said the concerns of the fishing community were being considered during project planning.
He added that efforts were being made to ensure infrastructure development moves forward without affecting the traditional livelihoods of fishermen.
Major infrastructure push for Mumbai
The Mumbai Coastal Road, desalination plant, Madh-Versova Bridge and other connectivity projects form part of Mumbai’s wider infrastructure development plan aimed at improving transport, reducing congestion and enhancing civic facilities, officials said.
