Dry Spell to End 10-Day Rainy Stretch Across Nagpur, Vidarbha; Deficit Narrows Sharply | Nagpur News
Nagpur: After nearly 10 days of widespread rainfall across Nagpur and the rest of Vidarbha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a temporary weakening of monsoon activity from Friday, bringing an end to the prolonged wet spell. Rainfall is expected to reduce significantly over most districts, with only isolated to scattered light showers likely over the next few days. The brief lull is expected to push daytime temperatures towards 32-33°C, offering residents a respite from the persistent rains. According to IMD, the weakening is part of a broader monsoon break over parts of Maharashtra as the prevailing weather systems lose strength. However, isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, and monsoon activity is expected to revive again next week. For Nagpur district, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for July 11 and 12, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall.Despite the expected dry spell, the recent rains have substantially improved the seasonal rainfall situation across Vidarbha. Between June 1 and July 9, the region received 216.6 mm of rainfall against the normal 257.4 mm, reducing the overall deficiency to 16%.The distribution, however, remains uneven. Gondia has emerged as the wettest district with 401.8 mm rainfall, recording a 34% surplus over its seasonal normal of 300 mm. Wardha (248.2 mm) and Buldhana (197.3 mm) have also received marginally above-normal rainfall. On the other hand, Gadchiroli continues to be the most rain-deficient district with only 176.5 mm rainfall against a normal of 326.8 mm, leaving it 46% below normal. Significant deficits also persist in Bhandara (-33%), Washim (-26%), and Chandrapur (-23%).Nagpur district has witnessed a remarkable improvement after the recent spell, recording 237.2 mm rainfall against a normal of 262.7 mm, reducing its seasonal deficit to just 10%. The latest figures indicate that while the monsoon has strengthened considerably over the past fortnight, several eastern Vidarbha districts will require sustained rainfall in the coming weeks to erase the remaining deficit.
