New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued notice to The Caravan in a defamation suit filed by CIAN Agro Industries & Infrastructure Limited and its Managing Director Nikhil Nitin Gadkari over an article that allegedly linked the company and the Gadkari family to the beef trade.
Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice on Monday on the plaintiffs’ application seeking an interim injunction against the publication and further dissemination of the article titled “Nagpur’s Beef: The Beef Company Enmeshed in Gadkari’s Business Empire,” published by The Caravan on March 1, 2026.
Plaintiffs Allege Defamatory Claims
The plaintiffs have alleged that the article contains false, misleading and defamatory statements that create an incorrect impression that CIAN Agro Industries and its promoters are directly or indirectly involved in the trade, processing or export of beef or other bovine meat products.
According to the plaint, CIAN Agro is involved in the manufacture and trading of agro-based and allied products, including frozen vegetables, spices, sugar and edible oils. The company has asserted that it does not deal in beef or other bovine meat products and has never held a licence or authorisation for the slaughter, processing, trade or export of beef, buffalo meat or other bovine meat products.
Dispute Over Alleged Links With Beef-Trading Companies
The plaintiffs have particularly challenged the article’s alleged portrayal of CIAN Agro as being connected with Rembal and Mithr International, companies described in the article as being involved in the beef trade.
The suit alleges that the article relied on shareholdings, loans and routine commercial transactions to suggest a connection between the entities that, according to the plaintiffs, does not exist.
The plaintiffs have further claimed that the article and its subsequent dissemination on social media have damaged the reputation of both CIAN Agro and Nikhil Gadkari, who is the son of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Plaintiffs Challenge Alleged Political and Communal References
The suit also alleges that the article acquired additional political and communal significance by connecting the alleged beef trade with the Gadkari family, cow-protection politics and references to attacks against Muslims.
The plaintiffs have argued that the article relied on speculation and inference despite, according to them, acknowledging that there was no official disclosure establishing a relationship between CIAN Agro and Rembal.
They have relied on portions of the article that allegedly state that the two entities were kept separate on paper to support their contention.
Legal Notice Issued Earlier
According to the plaint, the plaintiffs had issued a legal notice to The Caravan on March 4, 2026, seeking removal and retraction of the allegedly defamatory material.
The publication subsequently responded, asserting its right to freedom of speech under Article 19 of the Constitution. The plaintiffs have also pointed to the publication’s alleged acknowledgement that the article did not claim CIAN Agro possessed any licence or regulatory approval for the slaughter, processing or export of bovine meat.
What the Plaintiffs Seek
The plaintiffs have sought an interim injunction restraining The Caravan from publishing or disseminating further allegedly defamatory material.
They have also sought the removal of republications from the publication’s social media accounts and the takedown of derivative content posted by third parties based on the article.
The suit further seeks permanent and mandatory injunctions against future dissemination, removal of existing allegedly defamatory material and damages for the alleged reputational harm.
The matter is now scheduled to be heard on August 31.
The court’s issuance of notice is a procedural step and does not, by itself, constitute a finding that the allegations made by either side are established.
