Nagpur: Almost four weeks after a 50-year-old man was crushed to death after a part of a building collapsed, Ganeshpeth police have registered a case against the building owner, Suresh Khandwani, a resident of Chhapru Nagar, for causing death by negligence. On June 29, Santosh Gaur succumbed to the injuries after a building in Geetanjali Chowk on Central Avenue collapsed. According to the complaint filed by the deceased’s relative, Gopal Gaur, 66, Santosh contacted him on the evening of June 29 to repair his bike.Around 5.30pm, as Santosh parked his bike near the shop, a portion of the dilapidated Narayan Das Hasan Das Chamber building collapsed. The heavy debris fell directly on Santosh, a nearby car and four motorcycles. Santosh was rushed to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.Investigations revealed that parts of the building were crumbling for several days. Just five days before the incident, debris fell in front of a scooter shop. The matter was brought to the notice of owner Suresh Khandwani, but he failed to undertake any repair work, police said. This continued negligence ultimately led to the fatal collapse, investigators found.Further probe is underway to ascertain the structural condition of the building and possible violations of maintenance norms.
