Academic demands spark indefinite stir at MGIHU | Nagpur News

Wardha: Students, research scholars of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University (MGIHU) on Wednesday launched an indefinite satyagraha outside the admin building, alleging the university administration consistently ignored their academic demands.The protesting students said the agitation is not against any individual, but is aimed at safeguarding the university’s academic future, preserving its research culture, and protecting the educational rights of students.The students demanded immediate resumption of the PhD admissions, which has remained suspended since 2022. They also sought the restoration of department of women’s studies and the department of film studies at the university’s main Wardha campus. In addition, they demanded that diploma and certificate courses discontinued earlier be restarted from the 2026-27 academic session.The protesters said they had repeatedly submitted memorandums and conducted signature campaigns to press these demands. However, they alleged the administration has not taken any concrete decision yet.According to the students, the suspension of PhD admissions since 2022 has caused academic losses to research aspirants across the country and adversely affected the university’s research culture. They said such a prolonged halt in PhD admissions at a central university is a matter of serious concern.The students claimed shifting the department of women’s studies from the main campus had affected academic activities related to women’s studies, social justice, gender equality, and human rights. They also said the closure of the department of film studies has reduced opportunities in media, journalism, digital content creation, documentary filmmaking, and employment-oriented education.They expressed hope VC Kumud Sharma would take a positive note of their demands. They said despite submitting several representations, no concrete action had been taken, forcing them to exercise their rights through a Gandhian-style indefinite satyagraha.
