Model Code of Conduct hits NMC, budget presentation deferred

Nagpur: The presentation of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) much-awaited budget has been postponed following the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections.

The civic budget, which was scheduled to be presented on Tuesday, has now been put on hold as the Election Commission’s approval has become mandatory after the implementation of the code of conduct.

Confirming the development, Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre stated that the Model Code of Conduct came into force from Monday, resulting in restrictions on major policy announcements and financial decisions by government and civic bodies.

She informed that the NMC administration has already written to the Election Commission seeking permission to present the budget. The budget will now be tabled before the general body only after the Commission grants approval.

The sudden postponement has created uncertainty over several proposed development projects and financial allocations planned by the civic body for the upcoming fiscal year. Officials indicated that delays in budget approval could impact administrative decisions, sanctioning of funds and execution timelines for various infrastructure and public welfare projects across the city.

The NMC budget is considered crucial as it outlines the corporation’s financial roadmap, including allocations for roads, water supply, sanitation, healthcare, education and urban development works.

With the budget presentation now dependent on clearance from the Election Commission, political circles as well as citizens are closely watching the next course of action and the corporation’s future financial planning.
