No Pipeline for 20 Years, Yet NMC Collects Water Tax: North Nagpur Residents
Residents of Tarkeshwar, Swaminagar, Samrat Ashoknagar, Dattatraynagar, and Uppalwadi in north Nagpur have been dependent entirely on water tankers for the past two decades, with no NMC pipeline laid in their localities. They are now questioning why they continue to pay water tax to the corporation despite receiving no piped supply.
Rows of drums, cans, and buckets outside homes and women and children waiting since morning for tankers were a common sight across the settlements. Residents say repeated representations and agitations at the NMC have yielded nothing beyond assurances.
“We pay taxes, we vote, yet basic facilities remain out of reach,” said Shweta Raut, a local resident. Sahebrao, another resident, said the NMC has been given petitions multiple times but the pipeline proposal never moves forward.
Ward 2 nagarasevak Dinesh Yadav said he has repeatedly submitted proposals to the NMC. “When the tanker is delayed, workers miss their daily wages waiting for water. While one part of the city gets 24×7 supply, poorer localities here still have no pipeline,” he said. Wealthier residents have resorted to borewells, while others continue to struggle daily.
