International Space Station to be visible over city on May 10, 11
In a rare celestial event, the International Space Station (ISS) will be visible streaking across the skies of Vidarbha on May 10 and 11. The ISS has been passing over the region since Friday evening and will remain visible till Sunday.
“The ISS is the brightest artificial satellite and is often visible over Indian metro cities. At present, it is passing over Vidarbha, allowing people in Nagpur and Chandrapur to spot it on May 10 and 11,” said Suresh Chopane, president of Green Planet Society.
He explained that the ISS appears as a bright white dot in the sky, larger and faster than any visible star or aircraft, making it easy to identify at the scheduled viewing times. On Friday, the ISS was visible between 7.38 pm and 7.45 pm. It was again spotted on Saturday from 7.40 pm to 7.45 pm.
According to Chopane, skywatchers in Nagpur can next spot the ISS on Sunday from 4.42 am to 4.49 am and again between 7.43 pm and 7.47 pm. Another brief appearance is expected on May 11 from 3.58 am to 4.01 am.“The ISS is travelling from the southwest to northeast direction at a speed of over 28,000 kmph. It will be visible to the naked eye if the sky remains clear,” he added.
The ISS is larger than a football field and weighs nearly 460 tonnes. It orbits Earth every 90 minutes, allowing astronauts onboard to witness 16 sunrises each day. From Earth, the station appears as a bright and steady white light moving smoothly across the sky without blinking or changing colour. Its visibility across different parts of the country depends on its orbital inclination of 51.6 degrees.
