West Bengal LIVE UPDATES: Suvendu Adhikari set to be sworn
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of West Bengal’s Legislative Party, has been sworn in as chief minister as the state moves into the BJP era of government for the first time.
Adhikari was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal by Governor R. N. Ravi at a ceremony in Kolkata.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the grand swearing-in ceremony held in Kolkata. Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami, and other leaders also attended the swearing-in ceremony.
BJP leaders on Friday extended their wishes to Suvendu Adhikari after he was named the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party in West Bengal.
The BJP has 207 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured 80 seats after ruling the state for 15 years.
Adhikari had contested from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, defeating outgoing chief minister Mamata Banerjee from Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes, marking a major political development in the state.

2.30 pm: PM Modi wishes Suvendu a ‘fruitful tenure’
Congratulating Suvendu Adhikari on taking oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, the PM said on X, “Congratulations to Shri Suvendu Adhikari on taking oath as West Bengal’s Chief Minister. He has made a mark as a leader who has remained deeply connected to the people and understood their aspirations from close quarters. My best wishes to him for a fruitful tenure ahead.”
The Prime Minister also congratulated Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik on taking oath as ministers in the Government of West Bengal.
“Congratulations to Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik on taking oath as ministers in the Government of West Bengal. These leaders have worked tirelessly at the grassroots and served people. I am confident they will further strengthen West Bengal’s development journey as ministers. My best wishes,” he said.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, the Prime Minister also met the families of slain BJP workers Debasish Mondal, Soumitra Ghoshal and Ananda Paul.
11.30 am: Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as CM
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of West Bengal’s Legislative Party, has been sworn in as chief minister of Bengal.
Five BJP leaders, Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik, took oath as ministers in the West Bengal cabinet as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the state’s first BJP Chief Minister.

10.30 am: ‘Era of Sonar Bangla officially begins’
Ahead of his swearing-in as West Bengal’s chief minister, Suvendu Adhikari said the era of ‘Sonar Bangla (golden Bengal)’ has officially begun.
Adhikari called it a historic moment as the state prepared to see its first-ever BJP government since Independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata.
In a post on X, Adhikari wrote, “A historic dawn for West Bengal indeed. It is a moment of profound pride and jubilation to welcome Visionary Leader Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji to the City of Joy. Today, as we witness the swearing-in-ceremony of the first-ever BJP government in West Bengal since Independence, we fulfill the dreams of our founding fathers.”
He said the development marked the end of years of misrule and the beginning of a “double-engine” government focused on development, peace, and prosperity.
10 am: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami arrives
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has landed in Kolkata to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal.
On his arrival, CM Dhami received a warm welcome from BJP workers and the public. He expressed gratitude for the affection and respect shown to him by party workers and supporters during his visit to the state.
Meanwhile, artists were seen performing Bengali folk songs at Brigade Parade Ground ahead of the swearing-in ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, BJP Bihar State President Sanjay Saraogi termed the event historic, stating, “Today is a historic day for both the BJP and the people of Bengal.
