Standing Committee Rejects Land Acquisition Advisor, Gadkari’s Infra Plans May Stall

Nagpur: In a decision that could significantly impact infrastructure development in Nagpur, the city’s Standing Committee has rejected the proposal to extend the tenure of the land acquisition advisor, raising concerns over delays in several high-profile projects linked to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The move came during a recent committee meeting after objections were raised by Congress members over alleged complaints against advisor Promod Gavande. Following the discussion, committee chairperson Shivani Dani declined to approve the six-month extension proposed by the administration.

Major Projects Likely to Be Affected

Officials fear that the absence of a land acquisition advisor could slow down or halt multiple ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects in the city. Land acquisition plays a critical role in executing projects such as road widening and flyover construction—areas closely monitored by Nitin Gadkari.

Several projects are currently in progress, while others are still undergoing land acquisition procedures. With no advisor in place, uncertainty looms over their timelines.

Administrative Concerns Rise

The proposal to extend Gavande’s tenure was opposed by Congress corporator Wasim Khan, who cited multiple complaints against him. Acting on these objections, Shivani Dani rejected the administrative recommendation.

This decision has sparked concern within civic circles, with officials pointing out that appointing a new advisor could take time. Until then, land acquisition processes may remain stalled, directly affecting project execution.

Key Infrastructure Projects in Limbo

Among the most critical developments likely to be impacted is the major flyover project between Indora Chowk and Dighori Chowk. While construction is nearing completion, additional land is required for proposed service roads alongside the flyover.

Similarly, the widening of the Old Bhandara Road is underway, but disputes over compensation have already led some residents to approach the High Court. A verdict is expected soon, adding another layer of uncertainty.

Officials note that Gavande, who has been serving as land acquisition advisor since 2024, was well-versed with the complexities of these projects, having previously worked as Assistant Director in the Town Planning Department of the municipal corporation.

More Projects Facing Delays

Other infrastructure initiatives may also face setbacks, including:

• A proposed flyover from Kadbi Chowk to Mominpura (Pahalwan Shah Dargah), where land acquisition remains incomplete
• A road connectivity project linking KDK College Road to Wathoda Ring Road, aimed at easing traffic congestion

While surveys for these projects have been completed, the next phase—land acquisition—now faces uncertainty due to the absence of an advisor.

With no immediate replacement in place, officials admit that the sudden decision has created a gap in the system. The delay in appointing a new land acquisition advisor could push back timelines for multiple infrastructure projects, many of which are crucial to Nagpur’s urban development.
