Kurla landslide: NDRF to continue search and rescue operations
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Wednesday night said that its search and rescue operations at the a landslide site at Garib Nawab Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Kurla West area of Mumbai would further continue.
The landslide was reported at around 3:38 am, with several people feared trapped under the debris. Team 5F of the 5th Battalion NDRF, which had been pre-positioned at Ghatkopar for monsoon duty, was mobilised along with its canine, K9 Jessy.
NDRF, BMC and Fire Brigade conduct rescue
The NDRF team reached the site and launched collapsed structure search and rescue (CSSR) operations in coordination with the BMC and Mumbai Fire Brigade.
Teams carried out systematic search and debris-removal operations to locate people who may have been trapped.
Following the NDRF’s arrival, five bodies were recovered from the debris.
11 people accounted for
As of 9 pm on Wednesday, a total of 11 people had been accounted for, including four people who were evacuated and seven bodies recovered. Of the seven bodies, five were retrieved by the NDRF.
The search and recovery operation is continuing at the site to locate and recover any other victims who may remain trapped under the debris.
Congress blames BMC for pre-monsoon safety lapses as seven die
Meanwhile, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad has accused the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of failing to take adequate pre-monsoon safety measures following a landslide at a chawl in the Kurla area that killed seven people and injured seven others.
The landslide occurred in the early hours of Wednesday after heavy rain in Mumbai.
Two more people were feared trapped under the debris, with rescue operations continuing into the evening.
Gaikwad alleged that the civic administration had failed to act on a request she made in April for a safety audit of vulnerable areas in Kurla and Ghatkopar.
She said she had also sought the construction of protective walls at locations considered dangerous ahead of the monsoon.
“Unfortunately, little work was done on my demand for an audit of vulnerable areas and construction of protective walls,” Gaikwad said.
She demanded that responsibility for the incident be fixed and that strict action be taken against those found responsible.
