Nagpur: The city police cyber cell is on high alert to tackle a surge of fake videos, misinformation and rumours circulating on social media regarding Delhi protests and developments from various parts of India, including Nagpur. Senior police officers said the cell is actively monitoring platforms to prevent digital unrest from spilling onto the streets.Several fake videos and misleading posts, including content linked to the RSS and other sensitive issues, have gone viral in Nagpur, posing fresh challenges for law enforcement in the last 48 hours, police sources said.Sources confirmed that coordinated campaigns are spreading unverified claims, old footage and manipulated videos linking local situations to Delhi events and protests from various states.These posts are being aggressively shared on X, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, often with inflammatory captions designed to incite tension, sources said.“Misinformation and fake videos portraying Delhi protest scenes as happening in Nagpur or other cities are creating a significant digital challenge,” a senior officer said,adding , “We are witnessing a rapid propagation of rumours and doctored content from across India, including Nagpur. People are reacting to these fake narratives, which puts pressure on ground-level policing and public order.”The police have formed special teams to trace the source of such fake content and issue immediate advisories.“Cyber experts are working round-the-clock to detect fake accounts, deepfakes and orchestrated campaigns aimed at disturbing communal harmony,” said Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy.High vigil is being maintained on all social media discussions, with swift action being taken under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act, Reddy said.Officials stressed that while freedom of expression is respected, spreading fake videos and rumours that endanger public safety will not be tolerated.Police are coordinating with major social media platforms for prompt removal of violative material and are using advanced analytical tools to map dissemination patterns. Community leaders are also being engaged to counter fake narratives with verified information through official channels.Senior officers, including deputy commissioner of police (Cyber) Deepak Aggarwal, are supervising the operations. Additional forces have been deployed to manage any potential fallout from this digital challenge.Residents are advised to follow only official police handles for updates.
