The agreement is valued at €107 million and covers comprehensive maintenance services for 250 high-powered WAG-12B electric locomotives. Alstom said the renewal follows four years of successful operations under the previous arrangement and reflects Indian Railways’ continued confidence in the company’s service performance.

Announced on 26 June 2026, the contract keeps MELPL responsible for maintaining both the locomotive fleet and the depot infrastructure at Nagpur. Alstom said the Nagpur depot has become a benchmark for collaborative excellence and operational success in India’s rail sector.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director – Alstom India, said:

“This contract renewal is a strong validation of our commitment to Indian Railways and the success of our partnership. We are proud that the trust placed in us has translated into proven performance and reliability of the WAG-12B e-loco, which are vital to India’s freight revolution.”

The WAG-12B units are 12,000 HP Prima T8 electric locomotives. Alstom describes them as fundamental to India’s green mobility goals, with the capability to haul 6,000-tonne loads at speeds of up to 120 kph. They serve as workhorses of the Dedicated Freight Corridors, significantly increasing freight capacity while lowering carbon emissions.

Under the agreement, MELPL will continue full maintenance of the 250 locomotives and related depot assets. Alstom will also keep deploying Prompt Response Teams at strategic locations across India, equipped with tools and spare parts to enable rapid issue resolution and maximize fleet availability.

The Nagpur agreement sits within Alstom’s wider WAG-12B programme for Indian Railways. In March 2025, the company said it had delivered the 500th Prima T8 WAG-12B electric locomotive from Madhepura, as part of a €3.5 billion contract to supply 800 double-section 12,000 HP freight locomotives. Alstom also said it had built maintenance depots at Saharanpur and Nagpur to support fleet availability and reduce maintenance costs, which makes the new Nagpur contract part of the service structure around this locomotive programme.

Alstom India service and training scope

Alstom also links the contract to skill development through ongoing training programs at the depot.

In India, Alstom says it is the only multinational sustainable mobility provider with a comprehensive portfolio covering rolling stock, components, signalling and services. The company operates 6 industrial sites and 5 major engineering centres in the country, serving domestic and international project needs. Alstom also says its local operations are aligned with Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, including efforts to strengthen local sourcing and the supply chain ecosystem.
