7 Nagpur women join 330 Mahila Manovikas crafters to set Guinness World Record of 47,671 National Flags spanning 12.18kms
Nagpur: Seven women from Nagpur joined 323 other crafters to create a Guinness World Record for the largest chain of crochet bunting featuring national flags at Port Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The 330-member Mahila Manovikas group, comprising knitters from India and abroad, stitched 47,671 hand-crocheted national flags spanning 12.18km. The initiative was inspired by the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

Mahila Manovikas was founded by Madhavi Suribhatla of Visakhapatnam, Savita Sonak of Nagpur and Anshu Malini of Jharsuguda. The group began working towards its fourth Guinness World Record in 2025. Participants ranged from a six-year-old to an 86-year-old. The seven Nagpur women were Savita Sonak, Aarti Deshpande, Pranita Lanjewar, Pallavi Deshpande, Smita Deshmukh, Kranti Sadekar and Sanskruti Sonak.

On average, each participant crocheted 175 flags at home before the group assembled in Visakhapatnam to attempt the record. All these flags were on display at the stadium where senior adjudicator Swapnil Dangrikar declared the news of the record.All these 47,671 flags, made with fine-quality wool, are reusable and will soon be distributed to the military persons of Eastern Naval Command.Earlier, the Mahila Manovikas Group set its first Guinness World Record in 2022 by creating crocheted caps. In 2023, the group achieved its second record with crocheted ponchos. Its third record came in 2025, when members created crocheted squares that were later stitched together to make blankets. All items produced as part of these group projects were subsequently used for charitable purposes, with every piece donated to needy people across India.
