17-Year-Old Aspiring Cricketer Dies by Suicide in Nagpur

Nagpur: A 17-year-old aspiring woman cricketer allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Nagpur after reportedly being distressed over not being selected in the recent Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) selection process, police said.

The incident came to light early Wednesday morning when the teenager was found hanging at her home in the Laxminagar area around 5:30 am. Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and initiated an investigation.

According to police, a handwritten note recovered from the scene read, “Mera selection nahi hua” (“I was not selected”), indicating that she was deeply upset after her name did not appear in the latest VCA selection list.

The deceased was a native of Akola district and had been living in Nagpur with her mother for the past two years to pursue her cricketing career. She was training at a local cricket academy with the dream of playing at higher levels. Her brother is also a cricketer.

Police said the preliminary investigation suggests the teenager had been under considerable mental stress following the selection process. However, officials clarified that the exact circumstances leading to her death will be established only after the investigation is completed.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
