Nagpur: Case Against Journalists Over Misleading Explosives Footage

Nagpur: A major stir was triggered in the city after a suspicious bag containing gelatin sticks and detonators was discovered near Dosar Bhavan under the jurisdiction of Ganeshpeth Police Station. Police swiftly reached the spot, sealed the area, and launched an investigation. The recovery of explosive materials created panic among residents in the vicinity.

However, the case took a controversial turn due to alleged misleading media coverage during the incident. Reports aired by News Express and News Bharat TV reportedly used footage that was incorrectly linked to the Mominpura Jama Masjid area, instead of the actual location in Ganeshpeth.

This misrepresentation raised concerns about potential communal tension, with allegations that the coverage hurt sentiments within the Muslim community and could have led to misunderstandings in the city.

Following the incident, a formal complaint was filed at Tehsil Police Station by Sajid Anwar (54), a resident of Mominpura. In his complaint, he stated that the reporting was not only inaccurate but also misleading and socially sensitive in nature.

Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case against two editors and the concerned reporter under relevant sections of law. Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.

The incident has once again raised serious questions about the credibility of “breaking news” culture and highlights the need for responsible, verified reporting—especially in sensitive situations that can impact public harmony.
