A Nagpur-based mobile application ‘Traffic Rewards’ launched by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is incentivising citizens for exhibiting good traffic behaviour.

A pilot project developed by Social Impact Innovation under the joint initiative of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the mobile app is rewarding Nagpur citizens who follow traffic rules with “points” to avail benefits and discounts from the leading brands of the country.

Launched after a pilot study of one-and-a-half-years, the application is available on both Android (Google PlayStore) and iOS (Apple Store) mobile devices. The project management consultant of the project is Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur.

Users are required to install “Traffic Rewards” from their respective app stores and register themselves, following which they will receive a tag — to be pasted on their vehicles — delivered to their place of residence free-of-cost.

RFID scanners, which are placed at about ten traffic signals across Nagpur, will identify the vehicles with the tags once they halt seeing the red signal. Each time the user adheres to the traffic rules, they receive 10 points on their app profile in real-time, which could be redeemed and utilised to avail benefits from over 100 Indian brands.

Sameer Gautam, Chief Executive Officer of Social Impact Innovation, said the scanners have been developed under the Make in India campaign. He also informed that rewards worth Rs 35 crore were available for redemption on the platform.

According to the team, the application will be a revolutionary step towards minimising road accidents.
