Nagpur District Schools Lack Basic Facilities: 67 Without Electricity, Ramps in Only 1,720
While thousands of crores are spent on development works, festivals and celebrations in the name of the government, basic facilities for education and essential infrastructure for students remain critically inadequate — and funds allocated for these purposes are not being utilised, a fresh data review has revealed.
According to U-DISE figures, Nagpur district has a total of 3,959 schools. While all schools claim to have drinking water facilities, a closer look tells a different story — 3,192 schools have electricity connections, meaning 67 schools are still without power. In the digital age, the absence of electricity effectively cuts students off from modern education tools. As for playgrounds, only 3,848 out of 3,959 schools have one, meaning 111 schools have no playground at all.
The situation regarding sanitation and accessibility is equally concerning. Only 3,848 schools have girls’ toilets, while 3,919 have boys’ toilets. Most alarming is the ramp facility for differently-abled students — available in only 1,720 schools across the district. Questions are being raised as to why government funds, released through official channels for improving school infrastructure, are not being spent at the ground level.
