CDV Alert: Nagpur Zoos Sanitised After Virus Found in Kanha Tiger, Shimla Leopard Cubs

Detection of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in a tiger at Kanha Tiger Reserve and leopard cubs at a rescue home in Shimla has triggered a statewide alert. In response, authorities have carried out complete sanitisation of Maharajbagh Zoo, Gorewada Rescue Centre, and Balasaheb Thackeray International Zoo in Nagpur.

CDV is a highly contagious viral disease that poses a serious threat to carnivorous animals. All zoos and Transit Treatment Centres (TTCs) across Maharashtra have been put on alert and issued precautionary advisories.

Strict restrictions have been imposed to prevent stray dogs from entering the centres, with perimeter walls and entry gates being inspected. Any newly arriving animal at rescue centres must undergo mandatory quarantine. Round-the-clock surveillance has been activated to monitor animal movement and behavioural changes. Staff have been directed to immediately report any unusual symptoms or sudden illness to senior officials.

Emphasis is being placed on proper nutrition and stress reduction for housed animals to build immunity. Employees have been instructed to strictly follow biosecurity and hygiene protocols, with regular medical check-ups made mandatory.

Officials said the measures reflect the administration’s preparedness to safeguard Nagpur’s captive wildlife from the outbreak.
