Nagpur Leads Maharashtra’s Solar Revolution; Over 1 Lakh Homes Adopt Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme
The Centre’s ambitious PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana has triggered a major clean energy movement across the country, and MSEDCL’s Nagpur Circle has emerged as one of the top-performing regions in Maharashtra. A total of 1,00,708 consumers from Nagpur and Wardha districts have successfully installed rooftop solar power systems under the scheme.
Nagpur Circle alone accounts for 17.72 per cent of all solar projects commissioned in MSEDCL’s operational area across Maharashtra, while its share in total installed solar capacity stands at 17.78 per cent. The achievement has positioned Nagpur prominently on the state’s solar energy map.
Nagpur district has recorded the highest participation with 82,601 consumers adopting solar energy, while 18,107 consumers from Wardha district have joined the initiative. Together, these rooftop solar installations have created a total power generation capacity of 382.6 MW, including 317.82 MW from Nagpur district and 64.76 MW from Wardha district.
Across Maharashtra, 5,68,293 consumers under MSEDCL’s jurisdiction have so far benefited from the PM Surya Ghar scheme, with the total installed capacity reaching 2,151.69 MW. The primary objective of the scheme is to provide households with up to 300 units of free electricity every month through rooftop solar generation.
One of the key attractions of the scheme is the direct subsidy provided by the Central Government. Consumers receive ₹30,000 subsidy for a 1 kW system, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more. The subsidy amount is directly credited to the beneficiary’s bank account.
Officials said the investment made on rooftop solar systems is generally recovered within three to four years through electricity bill savings, after which consumers can enjoy free or low-cost electricity for the next 20 to 25 years. The scheme significantly reduces the long-term burden of household electricity expenses.
The scheme also offers the benefit of net metering, allowing consumers to export surplus electricity generated by their solar systems to the grid. The excess power is adjusted in electricity bills or compensated financially, effectively turning consumers into power producers.
Appealing to citizens, housing societies and flat owners to take advantage of the initiative, Chief Engineer of MSEDCL Nagpur Circle, Dilip Dodke, urged residents to register on the official portal for the scheme and contribute towards green energy adoption and national energy security.
