Nagpur HC Seeks NMC Reply on Climate Steering Panel Directions
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has questioned how far the NMC has implemented directives issued by the state-level steering committee on environmental protection and climate change, and ordered the Municipal Commissioner to file a detailed response.
The matter came up during a joint hearing of two cases — a PIL filed by activist Rajesh Chavan concerning pollution from the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited’s Khaparkheda power plant, and a suo motu PIL registered by the court itself over rising air pollution in the city.
The bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Raj Wakhode was informed that both state-level and district-level steering committees on environment and climate change are functional. Implementation of district-level committee directives for urban areas falls under the NMC Commissioner, while rural areas fall under the District Collector.
The court sought specific clarification from the NMC Commissioner on action taken regarding urban recommendations. NMC sought additional time, which the court granted, directing a response by the second week of June.Petitioners were represented by Adv. Nilesh Kalwaghe, and the Pollution Control Board by Adv. S.S. Sanyal.
