NMC & Green Vigil Commemorate Earth Day 2026 with Citizen Outreach Campaign

Amid growing environmental challenges, the message of Earth Day 2026—“Our Power, Our Planet”—highlights that real progress comes from the collective actions of individuals and communities.

Earth Day began in 1970, inspired by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson following the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Today, coordinated by Earth Day.Org-India, it has become the world’s largest civic observance, celebrated in over 195 countries by more than one billion people.

In line with this global movement, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Green Vigil Foundation -an environmental NGO and official partner of Earth Day Network, commemorated Earth Day 2026 through a citizen outreach campaign at Children’s Traffic Park, Dharampeth, Nagpur.

Reflecting the essence of this year’s theme, the campaign highlighted that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility and a long-term investment. Members of Green Vigil Foundation actively engaged with citizens, encouraging the adoption of renewable energy, green living practices, water conservation, reduction of carbon footprint, and elimination of single-use plastics. Through impactful placards and direct interaction, the initiative emphasized practical, community-driven solutions. Around 500 citizens took a pledge to adopt sustainable lifestyles.

Mrs. Karuna Singh, Regional Director , Asia, Earth Day.Org, appreciated the efforts of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Green Vigil Foundation in spreading awareness and inspiring citizens to take meaningful action toward environmental protection.

Prominently present during the campaign were Mr. Manish Soni (PRO, NMC).

The success of the initiative was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Green Vigil members, including Kaustav Chatterjee, Surbhi Jaiswal, Mehul Kosurkar, Sheetal Choudhary, Bishnudeo Yadav, Priya Yadav, Shriya Jogey, Pinaki Banik, Parth Jumde, and Pratik Isampelliwar, along with the committed support of NMC staff.
