Anvar quits TMC, says party snubbed him

Thiruvananthapuram: Citing differences with the Trinamool congress, former Nilambur MLA P. V. Anvar Monday quit as Kerala convenor of the All India Trinamool Congress and announced that he would float a regional political outfit aligned with the ideology of Congress and Rahul Gandhi.

Announcing the decision after a party meeting held in Kochi, Anvar said that even though he requested a national leader to campaign for him in the recently concluded Assembly polls, the TMC was unwilling to do so as his candidature was supported by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

“They say if the flags of Congress and Trinamool appear on one stage together, it will affect the anti-Congress, anti-Left and anti-Bharatiya Janata Party politics they raise in Bengal. We can’t continue in such a political scenario,” he said, adding that his new political party will begin functioning by 15 May.

The TMC is yet to officially comment on Anvar’s departure. ThePrint reached out to senior AITC leader Derek O’Brien but did not receive a response.

Anvar, who previously represented Malappuram’s Nilambur constituency joined the Trinamool Congress in early 2025, after he announced his resignation as MLA. The independent MLA, who was supported by the Left, had publicly raised allegations of corruption against Pinarayi Vijayan. The politician then floated the Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK) and tried to join the the Tamil Nadu’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, but failed. In January 2025, he joined the TMC in the presence of party leader Abhishek Banerjee.

Meanwhile, another group within the party, which also claimed to be the Kerala unit of the TMC, maintained that Anvar has nothing to do with the state unit of the party.

After multiple attempts, Anvar was inducted into the Congress-led UDF as an associate member in December 2025, shortly after the local body polls.
