Nagpur: For students accustomed to navigating university rules through notices and circulars, a face-to-face conversation with the vice-chancellor offered a rare opportunity to voice concerns directly.In a first-of-its-kind outreach initiative, Nagpur University (NU) VC Manali Kshirsagar visited colleges in Gondia and Bhandara districts on Saturday, engaging students in discussions on issues ranging from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and examinations to artificial intelligence, social media and the growing pressures faced by young people.University officials said the initiative was aimed at understanding student concerns first-hand rather than through conventional administrative channels.At Dhote Bandhu Science College in Gondia, discussions extended beyond routine academic matters. Students shared their perspectives on the changing education landscape, while Kshirsagar explained key aspects of NEP 2020, including open elective courses, multidisciplinary learning and field-based projects.The interaction also focused on growing influence of technology in education and everyday life. Conversations around Gen Z, AI and social media enabled students to reflect on how rapidly evolving technologies are shaping learning, communication and social behaviour.Encouraging a research-oriented mindset, Kshirsagar urged students to look beyond conventional classroom learning and engage with contemporary issues through innovation, inquiry. Addressing those pursuing MSc, she highlighted the importance of developing original ideas and undertaking meaningful research projects.The discussions also touched upon sensitive issues, including academic stress, social pressures and mental well-being. Students spoke openly about the challenges confronting their generation and the impact these pressures can have on their lives. The recent student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also figured in the exchange.Later in the day, she visited Jagat Arts, Commerce and Indiraben Hariharbhai Patel Science College in Gondia and JM Patel Arts, Commerce and Science College in Bhandara. During the visits, she interacted with principals, teaching and non-teaching staff and students, while reviewing academic departments, laboratories, libraries and other facilities.Kshirsagar highlighted importance of employability skills, research orientation and tech-driven courses.
