Mumbai sees sharp rise in monsoon diseases; 1,380 malaria cases reported in July

Mumbai has witnessed a significant rise in monsoon-related diseases in July 2026, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Cases of malaria, dengue and gastroenteritis increased compared with June, prompting civic authorities to intensify preventive measures across the city.

Recently released BMC data shows that malaria cases more than doubled, rising from 655 cases in June to 1,380 cases in July. Dengue cases also increased sharply from 266 in June to 466 in July.

Cases of gastroenteritis rose from 603 in June to 851 in July, while Covid-19 infections increased from 27 to 58 cases during the same period.

The number of leptospirosis cases more than doubled from 33 in June to 78 in July, while H1N1 infections increased from 48 to 105.

Surveillance drive across Mumbai

To curb the spread of diseases, the Mumbai civic body conducted extensive health surveys in city until July 26.

– Houses surveyed: 6,51,336

– Residents screened: 23,09,842

– Blood samples collected: 75,650

– Health camps organised: 123

– Citizens given preventive treatment for leptospirosis: 52,286

Anti-mosquito campaign intensified

The BMC has intensified mosquito-control measures in areas prone to waterlogging and mosquito breeding.

Malaria control

– Breeding spots inspected: 54,604
– Mosquito breeding found at 4,569 locations

Dengue control

– Potential breeding spots inspected: 10,99,325
– Breeding found at 29,824 locations
– Tyres removed: 2,535
– Scrap items removed: 64,546

Fogging and rodent control measures

The civic body carried out fogging operations in thousands of residential societies and neighbourhoods.

– Buildings covered under fogging: 42,284

– Chawls covered: 5,54,092

For rodent control between July 1 and July 30:

– Rats trapped in cages: 2,623

– Rats killed using rodenticides: 583

– Total rats caught: 3,206

BMC issues public advisory

The BMC has urged residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito-borne and water-borne diseases.

Citizens have been advised to:

– Avoid water stagnation around homes and offices.

– Empty containers, tyres and flower pots regularly.

– Use mosquito repellents, especially during the day and evening.

– Drink boiled or purified water.

– Wash hands frequently and maintain hygiene.

– Avoid eating food from unhygienic places.

– Seek immediate medical attention in case of fever, cough, diarrhoea or body aches.

The civic body has also advised elderly people, children and those suffering from chronic illnesses to take extra precautions during the monsoon season.
