NMC collects Rs100 crore in property tax in four months

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) crossed the Rs100-crore mark in property tax collection within the first four months of the 2026-27 financial year, with a last-minute rush by taxpayers to avail the early payment rebate before the July 31 deadline.According to figures available till July 30, NMC collected Rs100.29 crore from 2,37,113 properties, accounting for about 13.4% of its annual property tax demand of Rs749.82 crore (Rs222.96 crore current and 526.85 crore arrears).Of the total collection, Rs72.75 crore came from current year’s demand, while Rs27.54 crore was recovered from arrears. The surge is largely attributed to the incentive scheme approved by the general body, under which property owners paying their tax online by July 31 received a 15% rebate, while those making payments at civic facilitation centres were eligible for a 10% discount.Taxpayers paying after July 31 but before December 31 will receive a 5% rebate, while eco-friendly properties adopting measures such as rainwater harvesting and rooftop solar installations can claim an additional rebate under the civic body’s green incentive policy.Among the 10 zones, Laxmi Nagar emerged as the top revenue contributor with Rs15.94 crore, followed by Mangalwari at Rs14.19 crore, Hanuman Nagar at Rs12.67 crore, and Nehru Nagar at Rs12.65 crore. Gandhibagh recorded the lowest collection at Rs4.24 crore, followed by Satranjipura with Rs3.36 crore.Ashi Nagar, despite having the highest property tax demand of Rs146.88 crore and the largest property base of 1.20 lakh properties, collected only Rs9.17 crore, indicating significant scope for further recovery.Civic officials expect the collection to rise further once payments made on July 31 are reconciled. The property tax department is also intensifying recovery against defaulters through notices, warrants and enforcement measures while simultaneously using technology to identify unassessed properties and improve compliance.
